Researchers are investigating the genetic causes of muscle disease, especially those muscle disorders that occur alongside inherited bone diseases. The study aims to better understand tissue function and how changes in metabolism affect long-term health by using a novel technology called Diffuse Optical Spectroscopy. Diffuse Optical Spectroscopy is a fast and painless technique developed at the University of California, Irvine. This device measures the concentration of blood, water, and fats in tissues by shining infrared light on the skin surface, similar to how a barcode scanner works. During the procedure, a probe is placed on the calf, bicep, or head and secured gently by hand or with approved wraps or medical adhesives. Small marks are made on the skin to ensure the probe can be positioned exactly the same if needed. There is no radiation involved, and in some cases, the detector is placed directly on the skin within protective casing. This procedure is not offered during pregnancy. Participants will undergo the Diffuse Optical Spectroscopy measurement, which involves placing the probe on specific body locations to evaluate tissue physiology. The study monitors muscle disease outcomes within one week. Researchers will collect data on tissue composition including blood, water, and lipid levels. The total participation duration is not specified, but assessments focus on understanding muscle and bone disorder interactions and their familial patterns.
