Inclusion

  • ability to undergo general anesthesia
  • Age \> 18 yrs
  • ability to give informed consent
  • requires total proctocolectomy,total abdominal colectomy, completion proctectomy, or sigmoidectomy
  • absence of exclusion criteria

Exclusion

  • age \< 18
  • pregnancy
  • emergency operation
  • contraindication for laparoscopic surgery
