Eligibility Criteria
Inclusion
- Patients \> 18 years of age
- intubated and mechanically ventilated for \< 48 hours at the time of screening
Exclusion
- pregnancy
- history of diaphragmatic paralysis
- neuromuscular blockade
- cardiac arrest
