What this Trial Is About

Researchers are investigating oxygen levels in the colon of people with acquired vascular abnormalities, such as angiodysplasia, arteriovenous malformations, and hemangiomas in the proximal colon. These abnormal blood vessels may cause bleeding or anemia and are more common in older adults or those with heart, lung, or kidney diseases. The study aims to understand if chronic low oxygen levels contribute to these lesions by comparing affected individuals with healthy controls. The study involves measuring oxygen saturation at five locations in the mucosa of the proximal colon during a standard colonoscopy. Participants include adults aged 18 to 89 with either a history of vascular lesions in the colon or a healthy colon. The oxygen levels in the colon tissue will be quantitatively analyzed over a 12-month period. Participants will undergo routine colonoscopy as part of their care, during which oxygen saturation measurements will be taken. Researchers will monitor colon oxygen levels and compare findings between those with vascular lesions and healthy participants. The study assesses colon oxygenation changes as the primary outcome over one year, providing insight into the role of oxygen in vascular lesions of the colon.
