Researchers are evaluating the effectiveness of a text message program called ASPIRE designed to reduce hazardous alcohol use among young adults aged 18 to 25 who are considering cutting back on drinking. The study compares ASPIRE, which addresses cognitive, behavioral, and peer influences on drinking, with another text message program that focuses only on cognitive and behavioral elements. The goal is to measure changes in drinking behavior over 3, 6, and 12 months and understand which groups benefit most. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive brief text messages twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. One group receives messages targeting thoughts, behaviors, and peer-related influences on drinking, while the other group receives messages focusing solely on thoughts and behaviors. These interventions are delivered through mobile phone text messaging and monitored over the study period. During the study, participants will be assessed at 3, 6, and 12 months to track the number of binge drinking days and negative alcohol-related consequences. Researchers will collect data through questionnaires and monitor changes in drinking habits. The total participation time spans at least one year, with ongoing evaluation of behavioral changes and peer influence effects. The study is sponsored by Stanford University and does not include healthy volunteers.
