Using Transabdominal Ultrasound to Detect Intraperitoneal Adhesions Before Laparoscopic Surgery in Women with Previous Abdominal Surgeries

This research focuses on women with a history of previous abdominal surgeries who are scheduled for elective laparoscopy. It aims to evaluate how accurately transabdominal ultrasound can detect intraperitoneal adhesions before surgery. Laparoscopy is considered the gold standard for visualizing these adhesions, and the study investigates whether ultrasound can help ensure the safety of the initial trocar insertion. Participants will undergo transabdominal ultrasound using the sliding sign technique before their laparoscopic surgery. The ultrasound results will be compared to findings during laparoscopy to assess how well the ultrasound detects adhesions. This observational study includes women with prior laparotomies, transverse suprapubic or midline incisions, and cesarean sections. During the study, researchers will collect data from patient selection through the laparoscopic operation itself. They will measure sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of the ultrasound sliding sign in detecting intraperitoneal adhesions. The study is sponsored by Sohag University and will last until August 2026, with participation involving diagnostic ultrasound and laparoscopy to confirm adhesion presence and type.
