Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Diagnosed with hand osteoarthritis according to American College of Rheumatology criteria
- History of hand osteoarthritis for at least 3 months before enrollment
- History of taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for hand osteoarthritis
- Aged between 18 and 80 years
- Average pain intensity of at least 40 mm on visual analog scale in the dominant hand over last 48 hours
- Increase in pain of at least 20 mm after 1-week NSAID washout if currently using NSAIDs
- X-rays of dominant hand showing Kellgren-Lawrence grade 1, 2, or 3 changes in symptomatic joints
- Negative rheumatoid factor and anticyclonic citrullinated peptide test results
- Able to follow the study protocol and understand medical information
- Willing to sign informed consent
You will not qualify if you...
- History or evidence of secondary osteoarthritis or symptomatic osteoarthritis in other locations requiring treatment
- History of inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis), hemochromatosis, metabolic, or neuropathic arthropathies
- Hand or arm trauma, dislocation, or surgery within the past 3 months
- Hand pain or stiffness due to tissue scarring or tendinitis
- Serious skin damage or disorders on the hands
- Use of antidepressants, anticonvulsants, vascular drugs, or narcotics within 10 days before study start
- Use of corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid injections within 3 months before enrollment
- Serious uncontrolled medical conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disorder, severe liver/kidney problems, or blood clotting disorders
- Fear of acupuncture or having received acupuncture treatment within 4 weeks before enrollment
