What this Trial Is About
Hepatitis C virus infection is a major cause of chronic liver disease, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. This research aims to estimate the prevalence of hepatitis C antibodies in people with risk factors for the virus who are seen in hospital settings in Colombia. The study highlights the challenges in timely diagnosis and treatment access, especially in low- to middle-income countries, and seeks to improve awareness and care for affected patients through opportunistic screening. The study is observational and involves screening adults using a rapid antibody test for hepatitis C at seven hospital institutions. Participants include anyone over 18 years old attending hospitalization, emergency, outpatient, or other hospital services. Those who test positive will be guided to confirmatory viral load testing. The study supports patients in accessing treatment and improving adherence to care. Participants will complete a questionnaire and provide a small blood sample through a finger prick for the rapid test. A hepatologist will review results via teleconsultation and advise on confirmatory testing. Researchers will measure the prevalence of hepatitis C antibodies and assess treatment opportunities over 12 months. The study includes patients up to 100 years old and involves informed consent, data collection, and monitoring to help inform public health strategies and improve care pathways.
