What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying how a school-based hydration program affects children's health and behaviors over three years. This program aims to improve hydration by installing water stations and encouraging healthy drinking habits, while also monitoring effects on dental health, body mass index, and academic outcomes. The study focuses on students in districts with new hydration policies to promote equal access to drinking water. The study compares two groups: one group receives no intervention, while the other participates in a 4-month hydration program. This program provides refillable water bottles and includes social marketing, behavioral support, education, and outreach to encourage water consumption at school. Schools will be gradually introduced to the program in a randomized, stepped-wedge design. Participants will be observed during lunch for water station use, and assessments of body mass index and dental health will be conducted up to three years. Surveys will gather information on beverage choices and hydration perceptions. Researchers will also evaluate school environment factors and academic performance. The study will last up to three years, with ongoing monitoring of hydration habits and related health outcomes.
