AI-Powered Digital Self-Assessment for Preclinical Tooth Preparation in Dental Students A Randomized Controlled Study Comparing Two Digital Software Tools and Traditional Faculty Assessment

Researchers are evaluating different methods to assess tooth preparations for metal-ceramic crowns among undergraduate dental students. The study compares traditional faculty-based assessment with two AI-assisted digital self-assessment software programs. The goal is to examine the accuracy of tooth preparation outcomes and student learning progress during a training period at the College of Dentistry El Alamein, AAST. Participants are divided into three groups one uses a license-free digital comparison tool Non-metrology-grade digital group, another uses metrology-grade 3D inspection software Metrology-grade digital group, and the third group follows traditional assessment with silicone putty index and periodontal probe assisted by experienced instructors. Each group receives different feedback methods based on their assessment technique. During the study, dental students tooth preparation scores and deviations from the ideal preparation will be measured over five weeks. Assessments will include digital scans and instructor evaluations. The study uses randomized allocation and single masking. Participant involvement includes attending scheduled training and examination sessions to monitor learning and preparation accuracy throughout the study period.
