What this Trial Is About
The goal of the observational APS phenotyping study is to better understand risk factors, potential biomarkers, length and severity of illness, and recovery for adults with ARDS, pneumonia, and/ or sepsis. This study will also generate a biobank of specimens collected from these patients that will be available to investigators for future studies of ARDS, sepsis, and/or pneumonia.

Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Age 18 years or older
- Admitted or planned admission to an ICU or hospital unit providing IV vasopressors or advanced respiratory support
- Acute heart or lung dysfunction with new invasive or non-invasive ventilation, high flow oxygen of 6 lpm or more, or vasopressor medication for at least one hour
- Heart or lung dysfunction attributed to an acute inflammatory condition such as infection, pneumonia, aspiration pneumonitis, pancreatitis, or certain auto-inflammatory diseases
You will not qualify if you...
- Patient or legal representative declines participation
- Heart or lung dysfunction present for more than 48 hours
- Patient has been in the eligible hospital unit for more than 120 hours (5 days)
- Patient no longer expected to meet heart or lung dysfunction criteria 24 hours after enrollment
- Patient desires comfort measures only
- Patient is a prisoner
- Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest led to this hospitalization
- Residence in a long-term acute care facility before hospitalization
- Presence of tracheostomy for respiratory failure
- Home invasive or non-invasive ventilation (except for sleep disorder treatment)
- Heart or lung dysfunction caused by conditions other than ARDS, pneumonia, or sepsis, including drug overdose without infection, trauma without infection, chronic lung disease without infection or inflammation, asthma, COPD, sarcoidosis, interstitial lung disease, neuromuscular respiratory failure, status epilepticus, pulmonary embolism, heart failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, stroke or brain hemorrhage, acute bleeding, or cytokine release syndrome from chemotherapy
- Inability or unwillingness to complete study blood draws due to local policies
