Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson's disease confirmed by a movement disorders neurologist using the United Kingdom Brain Bank criteria
  • Self-reported responsiveness to levodopa treatment
  • Hoehn & Yahr stages I to III
  • Age between 55 and 85 years
  • Ability to follow directions to participate in testing and exercise classes
  • No medical conditions or medications that prevent participation in an exercise program
  • Willingness and ability to participate in rehabilitation about three times a week for four weeks without changing medications or other exercise programs during the study
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Major musculoskeletal or neurological disorders, structural brain disease, epilepsy, acute illness, or health conditions other than Parkinson's disease that significantly affect gait and balance
  • Any medical condition that prevents exercise
  • Cognitive inability to participate in exercise, such as a MoCA score of 19 or less, prior dementia diagnosis, or inability to follow directions
  • Falling more than three times a week
  • Excessive use of alcohol or recreational drugs
  • Recent medication changes
  • Inability to stand and walk during the Instrumented Stand and Walk Test without using an assistive device
