Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson's disease confirmed by a movement disorders neurologist using the United Kingdom Brain Bank criteria
- Self-reported responsiveness to levodopa treatment
- Hoehn & Yahr stages I to III
- Age between 55 and 85 years
- Ability to follow directions to participate in testing and exercise classes
- No medical conditions or medications that prevent participation in an exercise program
- Willingness and ability to participate in rehabilitation about three times a week for four weeks without changing medications or other exercise programs during the study
You will not qualify if you...
- Major musculoskeletal or neurological disorders, structural brain disease, epilepsy, acute illness, or health conditions other than Parkinson's disease that significantly affect gait and balance
- Any medical condition that prevents exercise
- Cognitive inability to participate in exercise, such as a MoCA score of 19 or less, prior dementia diagnosis, or inability to follow directions
- Falling more than three times a week
- Excessive use of alcohol or recreational drugs
- Recent medication changes
- Inability to stand and walk during the Instrumented Stand and Walk Test without using an assistive device
