Researchers are investigating the factors that contribute to extreme longevity by studying centenarians living in Navarra, Spain. This study aims to understand the biological, clinical, environmental, and lifestyle influences on healthy aging by integrating clinical assessments with biological markers. The research addresses the growing challenge of demographic aging, where a significant portion of the population will be over 65 years old in the future, putting pressure on healthcare systems. Participants in this observational study are centenarians, individuals aged 100 years or older, residing in Navarra. The study collects a wide range of data including cognitive and functional assessments, clinical evaluations, and multi-omics biomarkers. Assessments take place at the start of the study and again at one year to track changes over time, aiming to reveal mechanisms that support healthy aging. During the study, participants undergo evaluations such as cognitive tests, physical performance measures, nutritional assessments, and collection of biological samples. These include tests like the Mini Mental State Examination, Barthel Index, and blood panels. Researchers also gather information about lifestyle, diet, and comorbidities. The main outcome is an integrated biological aging profile assessed at baseline and after one year, with ongoing monitoring to better understand aging processes and factors associated with longevity.
