Researchers are investigating how a simple bedside test called bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) can reveal changes in body water content during pregnancy and labor. The study focuses on understanding how different medical conditions, including hypertensive disorders and complications like hyperemesis gravidarum or major postpartum hemorrhage, might affect fluid balance in pregnant women. This observational study aims to enhance knowledge about hydration changes and their clinical relevance in pregnancy. The study involves pregnant women in several groups: those attending for elective cesarean section, those admitted for induction of labor expecting to stay over 24 hours, women with maternal conditions affecting body fluid such as pre-eclampsia, hyperemesis gravidarum, or major postpartum hemorrhage, and gestational age-matched control participants. BIA is used to measure total body water and differentiate extracellular and intracellular water compartments by transmitting electric currents at various frequencies. Participants will be assessed on admission using BIA to determine hydration status. Researchers will collect data during labor and delivery, including fluid intake and medical conditions. The main outcome measured is the bioimpedance assessment of hydration status upon admission. The study also includes monitoring of clinical and physiological parameters related to fluid balance. Participants may be involved for the duration of their hospital stay, with careful observation of body fluid changes and potential impacts on labor and delivery outcomes.

Participants with maternal conditions affecting body fluid, such as pre-eclampsia or postpartum haemorrhage, are observed for changes in hydration and fluid balance during pregnancy and after delivery.
