What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating biological and cognitive markers of neurodegeneration in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The study focuses on whether neurodegeneration, assessed through neurobiological markers and cognitive test performance, exists in these patients. It also explores the relationship between these neurodegenerative markers and how well patients stick to their prescribed positive airway pressure therapy. This observational study is led by Technische Universit e4t Dresden and involves newly diagnosed patients. Participants newly diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea will be observed while using their clinically prescribed positive airway pressure therapy. The study involves investigations before starting treatment and again six months after treatment begins. Researchers will compare patients who adhere to the therapy with those who do not to see if there are differences in neurobiological or cognitive measures. During the study, participants will undergo assessments including measurement of neurofilament light chain concentration, glial fibrillary acidic protein levels, cognitive tests like SDMT and MoCA, and sleep evaluations using polysomnography or similar methods. Sleep symptoms will also be assessed through questionnaires such as the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. These evaluations occur from enrollment through the six-month follow-up to monitor changes and safety over time.
