What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating a faith-based program called BREATHE Free designed to help adults stop using tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigarillos, filtered cigars, and vaping devices. This pilot feasibility trial aims to see if the program is acceptable, engaging, and helpful in reducing tobacco use compared to usual care. The study focuses on character strengths and resilience as part of the intervention. Participants are randomly assigned to either attend 12 weekly in-person group meetings where they go through the BREATHE Free curriculum or receive usual care with information and referral to a tobacco quit line. The curriculum teaches practices such as love, perspective, hope, forgiveness, spirituality, and gratitude to support quitting tobacco. The control group does not attend the meetings but receives standard support. During the study, all participants will answer questions about their tobacco use, character strengths, and resilience. Expired carbon monoxide levels will be measured to assess smoking status. Engagement with the program will be tracked weekly from week 2 to week 12, and acceptability will be evaluated at the final meeting. Outcomes such as cigarette use, smoking abstinence, and resilience will be measured at baseline, week 12, and week 16. The study starts in March 2025 and will run until December 2026.
