Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Body mass index values of 40 kg/m² or less
You will not qualify if you...
- Not weight stable (more than 5% change in body mass over the past six months)
- Overt cardiovascular, neurological, renal, liver, and/or metabolic illness (e.g., diabetes mellitus)
- Current or history of uncontrolled Stage 2 hypertension (blood pressure >140/90 mmHg); anti-hypertensive medications are permitted
- Diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea
- Previous bariatric surgery
- Diagnosis or signs of overt airway diseases
- Current or recent (within past 6 months) regular use of tobacco or nicotine products
- Recent abdominal surgery or abdominal hernia
- Asthma with very low symptom awareness and frequent severe exacerbations
- Ruptured eardrum or other ear conditions
- Markedly elevated left ventricular end-diastolic volume and pressure
- Worsening heart failure signs and symptoms after respiratory/inspiratory muscle training session
- Current cold, sinusitis, or respiratory tract infection
- Not adults (infants, children, teenagers)
- Pregnant, lactating, or post-menopausal females
- Prisoners
