What this Trial Is About
Effective communication between healthcare providers and parents is essential for optimal care of children with cancer. This research evaluates a communication tool called Cancer Care Companion, designed to be used through electronic health records (EHR). The study aims to assess how acceptable, appropriate, and feasible this tool is for parents of pediatric cancer patients. Parents will have access to the Cancer Care Companion via Epic MyChart for a period of 3 months. During this time, they will complete educational modules, check-in surveys, and may choose to receive patient stories. The program includes 13 educational tasks, 7 surveys, and 5 patient stories available upon request, with ongoing access to revisit content during the intervention. Participants will complete surveys before and after using the tool and take part in a semi-structured interview after the 3-month period. Researchers will measure outcomes such as tool feasibility, quality of information exchange, trust in physicians, caregiver burden, parental anxiety, communication quality, and perceptions of the tool's usability, usefulness, and barriers. The study is sponsored by Washington University School of Medicine and runs until August 2027.
