Study of Capillary Leak Index and Biomarkers to Predict Outcomes in Adults with Post-Operative Abdominal Sepsis in ICU

Researchers are evaluating the value of the Capillary Leak Index CLI compared to conventional biomarkers in predicting outcomes for critically ill patients who develop post-operative abdominal sepsis, specifically focusing on 28-day mortality and other related health results. The study is observational and sponsored by Benha University, aiming to improve understanding of sepsis prognosis in intensive care settings. Blood samples will be collected at multiple time points within 1-2 hours of ICU admission Day 0, Day 1, Day 2, and Day 7. These samples will be used to monitor trends in CLI and other conventional biomarkers during the ICU stay to assess their prognostic significance in patients with post-operative secondary peritonitis. Participants will undergo clinical assessments including evaluation of abdominal pain, peritoneal signs, systemic inflammation, and sepsis diagnosis based on Sepsis-3 criteria. Researchers will measure all-cause mortality from October 2025 to October 2026. The study involves monitoring patients for at least 48 hours postoperatively in the ICU, collecting blood samples, and analyzing biomarker trends to understand their relationship with patient outcomes.
