Five-Year Cardiovascular Health Evaluation After Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children MIS-C Comparing Affected Individuals and Healthy Controls

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children MIS-C is a serious condition linked to SARS-CoV-2 infection that often affects the heart and blood vessels. While many children recover quickly from acute heart problems, the long-term effects on cardiovascular health are not fully known. This study aims to evaluate heart and blood vessel health five years after MIS-C by comparing affected individuals with similar healthy controls using advanced tests and measurements. Participants include two groups those who had MIS-C and healthy children or young adults matched by age, sex, and body mass index. Each participant will undergo a thorough heart and vascular assessment including blood tests for endothelial injury markers, ultrasound of carotid arteries, heart ultrasound echocardiography, arterial stiffness measurements, and exercise testing on a cycle ergometer. The study focuses on measuring central aortic systolic blood pressure as the main outcome. Participants will attend a study visit approximately five years after MIS-C diagnosis where all assessments will be done. Researchers will compare various cardiovascular parameters, such as blood pressure, arterial stiffness, and exercise capacity, between the groups to identify any lasting abnormalities. This cross-sectional study will help improve understanding of long-term cardiovascular health after MIS-C and may guide future monitoring recommendations.
