What this Trial Is About

This research aims to understand how body composition affects performance in collegiate cheerleaders and dancers, focusing on differences between those classified as normal weight obese and those as normal weight lean. The study explores how these body composition types relate to power, strength, muscle quality, lifestyle behaviors, and nutrition-related factors in athletes who rely on strength, power, and appearance for their performance. It addresses the limitations of BMI in identifying excess body fat in athletic populations and investigates how these differences impact physical function and performance outcomes. Participants will be divided into groups based on normal weight obese or normal weight lean classifications. The study includes body composition assessments, physical performance tests, and questionnaires that measure energy availability, muscle quality via echo intensity and muscle thickness, nutrition knowledge, and subjective sleep. All assessments occur on the day of study enrollment to characterize these factors comprehensively. During the study, participants will undergo various evaluations such as body composition measurement, physical fitness testing, and completing questionnaires about lifestyle and nutrition. Researchers will monitor energy availability over a 7-day period to assess nutritional status. The main outcomes measured include physical fitness and energy availability, alongside secondary assessments of muscle quality, sleep, and nutrition knowledge. The study is observational and involves collegiate female athletes aged 18 to 30, lasting until May 2026.
