What this Trial Is About

Researchers are investigating how differences in brain structure relate to personality and behavior in adults with and without alcohol dependence. The study also aims to explore connections between these brain differences and specific genetic variations related to neurotransmitter activity. This observational research involves both inpatient individuals diagnosed with alcohol use disorder and non-treatment seeking adult volunteers. Participants will undergo brain imaging assessments, including a variety of MRI scans such as whole brain structural MRI, Diffusion Tensor MRI, and resting state functional MRI, while performing computerized cognitive, motivational, and emotional tasks. These assessments help characterize brain behavior, structure, function, and connectivity related to addiction stages. The study includes groups of individuals currently in alcohol use treatment and those not seeking treatment. During a study visit at the NIH Clinical Center, participants will complete screening procedures including medical history, physical exam, EKG, blood and urine tests, and a psychiatric interview. They will also be asked about their alcohol use and play computerized games, some while inside an MRI scanner. Researchers will measure brain imaging signals linked to addiction phases, analyze genetic and behavioral data, and monitor task performance. The total participation involves one or more visits with detailed assessments to understand the brain and behavioral factors associated with alcoholism.
