Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Patients who meet the Berlin definition of ARDS and require invasive mechanical ventilation
- ARDS onset within 3 days before study inclusion
- Patient PaO2/FiO2 ratio of 200 mmHg or less at inclusion
- Age between 18 and 85 years
You will not qualify if you...
- Patients with intracranial hypertension, pleural fistula, pneumothorax, HIV, HBV, or HCV
- Age younger than 18 years or older than 85 years
- Pregnant patients
- Severe hemodynamic instability (vasopressor increase over 30% in first 6 hours or Norepinephrine over 0.5 mg/kg/min)
- Patients unable to perform EIT ventilation and/or perfusion testing due to factors like inability to perform internal jugular vein catheterization, hypernatremia, chest malformation, active implant device, unstable spinal injury or fracture, or skin lesions near EIT monitoring area
- Patients with abnormal esophageal anatomy unable to have gastric tubes
- Patients who do not agree to participate in the study
