Study of Blood Biomarkers in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Patients During Worsening Respiratory Symptoms Requiring Hospital Admission

This research focuses on patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis IPF, specifically those who experience an exacerbation or a worsening of respiratory symptoms requiring hospital admission. The study aims to investigate the diagnostic and prognostic value of clinical and blood biomarkers during these exacerbations in patients already enrolled in a prior IPF cohort PFBIO. Patients admitted to the hospital with increased respiratory symptoms are recruited within 24 hours of admission. Clinical data and blood samples are collected to analyze biomarkers. Patients from the original PFBIO cohort who experience exacerbations are included in this extension study, PFBIO-EXA, to gather further clinical and biological data. Participants provide quality-of-life questionnaires and other patient-related outcomes during their hospital stay and follow-up. Researchers monitor mortality at 30 and 90 days, biomarker levels, respiratory support, treatment during and after hospitalization, and changes in functional level. The study involves longitudinal follow-up for up to five years for continuous data collection and evaluation.
