Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Female aged 20 to 45 years old.
- Confirmed diagnosis with PCOS according to the 2023 International Evidence-based Guideline for the Assessment and Management of PCOS.
- Ability to give informed consent.
You will not qualify if you...
- Hypersensitivity to either metformin or NAC.
- Use of medications affecting carbohydrate metabolism, such as insulin or sulfonylureas, or hormonal analogues within two months prior to enrollment.
- Hyperprolactinemia with prolactin level above laboratory reference range.
- Diabetes mellitus.
- Thyroid dysfunction with abnormal TSH levels.
- Renal impairment with creatinine clearance less than 30 ml/min.
- Severe liver impairment with significant biochemical abnormalities.
- Active alcohol abuse.
- History of lactic acidosis during metformin therapy.
- Active peptic ulcer.
- Congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
- Cushing's syndrome.
- Androgen secreting tumors.
- Use of spironolactone, other anti-androgens, or hormone therapy for hirsutism within 3 months before enrollment.
- Decompensated heart failure.
