Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Female aged 20 to 45 years old.
  • Confirmed diagnosis with PCOS according to the 2023 International Evidence-based Guideline for the Assessment and Management of PCOS.
  • Ability to give informed consent.
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Hypersensitivity to either metformin or NAC.
  • Use of medications affecting carbohydrate metabolism, such as insulin or sulfonylureas, or hormonal analogues within two months prior to enrollment.
  • Hyperprolactinemia with prolactin level above laboratory reference range.
  • Diabetes mellitus.
  • Thyroid dysfunction with abnormal TSH levels.
  • Renal impairment with creatinine clearance less than 30 ml/min.
  • Severe liver impairment with significant biochemical abnormalities.
  • Active alcohol abuse.
  • History of lactic acidosis during metformin therapy.
  • Active peptic ulcer.
  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
  • Cushing's syndrome.
  • Androgen secreting tumors.
  • Use of spironolactone, other anti-androgens, or hormone therapy for hirsutism within 3 months before enrollment.
  • Decompensated heart failure.
