What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying the effects of liquid petroleum jelly and extra virgin olive oil on itching and scarring in patients who have suffered scald burns. These burns can cause complications such as itching, hypertrophic scars, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, and decreased quality of life. The study aims to provide evidence on managing post-burn itching and hypertrophic scarring, which are common and troubling complications during the wound-healing process. Current treatment options have limited evidence, and no prior scientific studies have evaluated these two moisturizers specifically for burn-related symptoms. Participants will be randomly assigned to three groups: one applying liquid petroleum jelly, another applying extra virgin olive oil, and a control group receiving no application beyond standard institutional recommendations. Those in the treatment groups will massage 5-10 ml of the assigned product onto the burn area twice daily for three months, with application recorded in a follow-up form. Patients will be visited on the 15th day, and at the first, second, and third months to monitor progress. Throughout the study, patients will complete several assessments, including the 12-item itch severity scale and patient and observer scar assessment scales, with wound area photographs taken. Data will be collected at baseline, 15 days, and monthly up to three months. The research team will analyze the effects of the treatments on itching, dryness, hypertrophic scarring, and patient comfort. The total participation duration is approximately three months, with ongoing evaluation to help improve nursing care for burn patients.
