What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating the effectiveness of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) in patients with bronchiectasis by comparing two different types of PR programs: home-based and hospital-based. While the benefits of PR are well known for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), there is limited evidence for its effect in bronchiectasis patients. This study aims to provide more data on how these two rehabilitation methods compare in improving lung function and quality of life for this group. The study includes two groups: one undergoing a supervised hospital-based PR program with exercises such as breathing techniques, treadmill, cycle training, arm ergometer, muscle training, and stretching over two months; the other group follows an unsupervised home-based PR program involving breathing exercises, chest hygiene training, peripheral muscle strengthening, and self-guided walking five days a week for two months. Patients in the home-based group will record their exercises daily, and physiotherapists will provide weekly phone support. Participants will have their pulmonary function, exercise capacity, dyspnea levels, and quality of life assessed before and after the two-month rehabilitation period. Key outcome measures include changes in the 6-minute walking distance and the modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale. Additional assessments will evaluate lung function, muscle strength, and quality of life. The study is non-randomized and lasts for two months, with monitoring done at the beginning and end of the rehabilitation period.
