AI-Summary

What this Trial Is About

This protocol compares the toxicity of radiotherapy or radiochemotherapy applied with different radiation modalities - protons or photons. Patients with different kinds of brain tumours and foreseen high-dose radiotherapy can be included. The hypothesis of the trial is that the rate of chronic toxicity 1 year after the end of radiotherapy is 15% lower after proton compared to photon treatment.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Diagnosis of primary brain tumor including gliomas (low or high grade), intracerebral meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngioma, or other rare brain tumors
  • Brain tumor recurrence without prior irradiation
  • Brain tumor recurrence with prior irradiation greater than 40 Gy in the overlapping tumor region
  • Medical indication for radiotherapy or radiochemotherapy
  • Both proton and photon therapy medically possible (no standard indication exclusively for one)
  • Age 18 years or older
  • General health status ECOG 2 or better, outpatient treatment possible
  • Indication for high-dose radiotherapy or radiochemotherapy (except group 4)
  • Ability and capacity to provide written informed consent
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Inability to provide written informed consent
  • Diagnosis of cerebral lymphomas
  • Presence of brain metastases
  • Very small tumors such as acoustic neuromas or very small recurrences where proton therapy is not an alternative to stereotactic radiotherapy
  • Inability to undergo MRI planning (e.g., contraindications to MRI)
  • Lack of patient compliance
  • Limited possibility for reproducible positioning due to severe mobility restrictions
  • Inability to attend regular follow-up visits as required by the study protocol
