What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating the accuracy of a contactless method called remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) to measure vital signs in adults visiting the Emergency Department. This observational study focuses on patients who are clinically stable and triaged as semi-urgent to non-urgent. The study aims to independently assess a cell phone-based rPPG technology, the VitalsTM system, to estimate heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and body temperature. The study will take place in two stages: first, collecting facial video data from 200 patients to calibrate the VitalsTM system in the Emergency Department environment, then evaluating the accuracy of the system in 1,000 ambulatory patients. Measurements will be taken using the VitalsTM platform based on facial video captured by an iPhone, iPad, and thermal camera, alongside simultaneous manual vital sign measurements by trained staff. Ambient temperature and light intensity will also be recorded during the assessments. Participants will be asked to sit still while their facial video and vital signs are recorded simultaneously. Data synchronization will help reduce measurement variations. The main outcome is the accuracy of heart rate estimation by the VitalsTM system compared to manual readings. Secondary outcomes include accuracy of blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, body temperature, and patient satisfaction and comfort with both measurement methods. The study runs from September 2024 with patient recruitment and measurements during weekdays.
