This is a two-group randomized controlled trial conducted at five hospitals across the U.S. designed to test the effectiveness of an Integrated infectious diseases/Substance Use Disorder outpatient clinic (IC) compared to treatment as usual aimed at reducing infection related readmissions and improving health outcomes in people hospitalized with an infection related to injecting opioids or stimulants.

Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Age 18 years or older
- Currently admitted to a participating study hospital (not Emergency Medicine)
- Injection opioid or stimulant use within the past 90 days as self-reported
- Active suspected or confirmed infection related to injection drug use at time of admission, including osteomyelitis, abscesses, septic arthritis, bloodstream infections, endocarditis, infected devices, skin and soft tissue infections, or other acute bacterial or fungal infections deemed appropriate by the site team
You will not qualify if you...
- Infection caused by something other than injection drug use as determined by site investigator
- Unable to provide informed consent due to sedation, intubation, language barriers, or cognitive impairment
- Unwilling to provide informed consent
- Unable to receive intervention due to geographic limitations
- Receiving comfort care or planned discharge to hospice
- Currently incarcerated at the time of hospitalization
- Other exclusion criteria as decided by the site investigator
