What this Trial Is About

To determine changes in power symmetry, gait symmetry, and functional outcomes for participants' poststroke (Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility) after participating in an intervention using a recumbent cycle with power biofeedback (BFB). To determine how this intervention can impact gait asymmetry, a common disorder poststroke secondary to hemiparesis. Gait asymmetry is a difficult impairment to treat because it is difficult for both therapists and patients to perceive. Training with BFB allows for quantitative data about the power production or lack of that directly impacts safety in walking, increased energy expenditure, and decreased gait speed.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Confirmed ischemic or intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke in the middle or anterior cerebral artery confirmed by CT, MRI, or clinical documentation
  • Lower limb weakness (hemiparesis) with lower limb Motricity Index less than 100
  • Aged 18 to 70 years
  • Functional Ambulation Category between 2 (Dependent Level II) and 5 (Independent on level surfaces only)
  • Medical clearance to participate in the study
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Contractures limiting lower limb range of motion
  • Unstable cardiovascular, respiratory, or metabolic conditions, including unstable angina or resting hypertension above 200/110
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Severe respiratory disorders limiting exercise
  • Inability to walk more than 150 feet before the stroke
  • Prior injury to peripheral or central nervous system
  • Moderate to severe hemispatial neglect
  • Major cognitive impairment preventing understanding of training instructions (unable to follow 3-step commands)
  • Severe aphasia preventing communication with the therapist
