What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating new blood-based markers to predict and diagnose infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN) in patients with necrotizing pancreatitis (NP), a serious complication of acute pancreatitis (AP). AP causes inflammation and damage to the pancreas, leading to tissue death in about 20% of cases. IPN can cause severe complications including organ failure, sepsis, and high mortality, highlighting the need for better early detection methods. This observational study involves patients diagnosed with NP confirmed by imaging and enrolled within two weeks of acute pancreatitis onset. Participants will be monitored locally through the University of Minnesota and M Health Fairview system. The study does not involve any experimental treatments but focuses on collecting clinical data and blood samples to identify immune and metabolic changes and novel biomarkers related to IPN. Participants will undergo assessments over a three-month period to understand immune-metabolic changes and discover new biomarkers. Researchers will track disease progression and outcomes without introducing treatments. The study aims to improve prognosis and guide therapy decisions by filling the current diagnostic gap. The total participation duration for outcome measurement is three months.
