Study of Dental Cleaning After Stem Cell Transplant to Prevent Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease in Adults Undergoing Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplant

What this Trial Is About

This trial studies patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant HCT for various blood cancers to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of dental cleaning after transplant in preventing chronic graft versus host disease GVHD. GVHD occurs when donated stem cells attack the patients normal tissues, and dental bacteria soon after transplant may influence its development. The study focuses on prevention of moderate-to-severe chronic GVHD over one year post-transplant. Participants receive a dental cleaning at baseline before transplant conditioning if they have not had one in the past 3 months, following standard care. Then, all patients undergo a simplified dental cleaning on day 28 after HCT. After these dental procedures, patients are followed up at days 84, 180, and at 1 year to monitor outcomes. During the study, participants have oral assessments including dental plaque sampling as part of ancillary studies. Researchers measure the probability of moderate-to-severe chronic GVHD at 1 year and grade III-IV acute GVHD at 6 months post-transplant. Feasibility is assessed by consent and intervention receipt rates over 2 years. Participants must attend a 1-year in-person oral medicine follow-up visit. The study period extends up to approximately 3 years from start to completion.
