What this Trial Is About
This research aims to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of an additional dental cleaning after an allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) to prevent chronic graft versus host disease (GVHD). GVHD occurs when donated stem cell graft cells attack the patient's normal tissues, and it is a common complication after HCT, which is used to treat certain blood cancers. The study explores whether bacteria in dental plaque shortly after transplant influence chronic GVHD development and whether post-transplant dental cleaning can help reduce this risk. Participants who have not had a dental cleaning within three months before the baseline visit will receive a dental cleaning before starting transplant conditioning, following standard care. Then, all patients will undergo a simplified dental cleaning on day 28 after the transplant. After these procedures, patients will be monitored with follow-up visits on days 84 and 180 and again at one year to assess outcomes. During the study, researchers will collect data on the occurrence of moderate-to-severe chronic GVHD at one year post-transplant, as well as the incidence of severe acute GVHD at six months. They will also track how many eligible patients consent to participate and how many complete the dental cleaning intervention. Participants will have follow-up assessments including oral medicine visits at one year, supporting long-term monitoring of their health and transplant outcomes.
