What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating a smartphone game called Detour designed to help young people aged 16 to 25 quit smoking. This randomized controlled trial compares Detour against a digital self-help brochure titled "Your personal plan to quit smoking." The study aims to assess how well the game supports smoking cessation and its impact on emotional well-being and smoking behavior over time. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group receives access to Detour for five weeks, which includes a stop plan, ecological momentary assessments, personalized in-game messaging, and participation in private social media groups. The other group receives a self-help digital brochure with guidelines for quitting smoking and strategies to manage cravings. Both groups begin their quit attempt on day 1 of week 1 and continue with their respective interventions for four additional weeks. During the study, participants complete assessments before and after the intervention period, including follow-ups at three and six months. Data collected includes smoking behavior, intervention usage, and emotional well-being. Researchers monitor smoking abstinence at six months as the primary outcome, with additional measures at post-test and during follow-ups. The study plans to recruit 604 participants and uses statistical analyses to evaluate the effectiveness of the game compared to the brochure.
