What this Trial Is About
Residents in long-term care homes often spend much of their day inactive and socially isolated, increasing their risks for depression, dementia, and decreased physical function. Researchers are evaluating an exergaming technology called MouvMat designed to improve mobility, cognitive function, and social connection among older adults living in these settings. This pilot randomized controlled trial aims to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of MouvMat compared to standard recreational activities. The study involves two groups: one using the MouvMat exergaming technology and a control group receiving usual recreational programming by therapists. The intervention group participates in 45-minute sessions three times a week for six weeks, playing interactive games on a digital surface either individually or in small groups. The control group meets on a similar schedule for standard activities. Both groups have their outcomes measured by a blinded research assistant. Participants will be evaluated at the start, midpoint (3 weeks), and end (6 weeks) of the intervention. Assessments include mobility tests such as the Timed Up and Go and 2-Minute Walk Test, cognitive tests like digit span and Trail Making Test, and measures of social isolation and depression. Safety is monitored by tracking any adverse events related to exergaming. The study also includes interviews with staff and family members to understand the technology's usability and enjoyment.
