Pilot Study Evaluating a Mobile App to Develop an Outcome Score for Knee and Hip Osteoarthritis and Joint Replacement Patients

Researchers are studying patients with knee or hip osteoarthritis and those who have undergone total knee arthroplasty TKA or total hip arthroplasty THA, common orthopedic procedures. The study aims to develop a combined outcome score that integrates demographic data, patient-reported outcome measures PROMs, and objective functional assessments. This score will help identify risk factors for dissatisfaction after surgery and support predictive modeling using a machine learning algorithm. Participants will be divided into three groups those using a specially developed mobile app to collect movement and health data, those not using the app but completing questionnaires by mail, and healthy controls using the app. The app collects patient-authorized movement data from smartphones, prompts participants to perform regular gait and knee function tests, and administers PROMs like KOOS and SF-36 at defined intervals. Data collection will continue for up to two years. Participants provide informed consent and use their own smartphones to share data voluntarily. Assessments include functional tests, questionnaires evaluating health and satisfaction, and movement data such as step count and gait parameters. The main measure is overall patient satisfaction, monitored for about a year. The study also monitors secondary outcomes like physical function and app satisfaction. Data privacy is strictly maintained, and participation involves a single on-site visit with ongoing remote data collection.
