Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Adult patients older than 18 years who require mechanical ventilation due to life-threatening hypoxia, respiratory rate over 30 breaths per minute, or disturbed conscious level
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Younger than 18 years old
  • Pregnancy
  • Surgical incisions that may interfere with ultrasound examination
  • Presence of hepato-splenomegaly or ascites
  • Neuromuscular diseases such as Myasthenia gravis or kypho-scoliosis
  • Diaphragmatic paralysis showing abnormal paradoxical movement during inspiration
