What this Trial Is About
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a condition marked by lasting airflow blockage that leads to serious health issues and reduced quality of life. This condition causes symptoms that interfere with daily activities and places a growing burden on healthcare systems, including in Norway. Researchers are evaluating a new approach that combines digital home-based care with guided self-determination follow-ups within primary care settings to help people better manage COPD and support sustainable healthcare.
The study compares two groups of primary care clinics randomly assigned to either receive the guided self-determination (GSD) follow-up program or continue with regular care. The GSD program involves four scheduled counseling sessions with a primary care nurse, supported by a digital platform featuring tools and reflection sheets to encourage participants to actively manage their health. This pilot trial aims to explore the feasibility, user experiences, and treatment fidelity of this intervention.
Participants will be assessed through various questionnaires and clinical data collected at baseline and at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, along with qualitative interviews between 6 and 18 months. Researchers will monitor adherence, retention, and attrition rates throughout the study. The total duration of participation is one year, during which weight and height will also be measured. This study seeks to improve daily living for people with COPD and contribute to future healthcare sustainability.
