What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying urinary tract infections (UTIs) in kidney transplant recipients, a common and serious complication leading to illness and hospital visits. About 20% of newly transplanted patients develop UTIs within the first three months, which can increase the risk of bloodstream infection and kidney rejection. This study aims to evaluate whether a voiding technique called "double voiding" can reduce the incidence of UTIs in these patients. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group will be taught to practice double voiding, which means passing urine twice each time to help empty the bladder more completely. The other group will continue with their usual voiding method. This intervention is being compared over the first three months after kidney transplantation to see if double voiding decreases UTI frequency. During the study, participants will be monitored for UTIs and related complications over three months post-transplant. Researchers will track the number and timing of UTIs, bacterial counts in urine cultures, bloodstream infections, and hospital admissions. These measures will help determine if double voiding offers benefits in reducing infections. The study is sponsored by Weill Medical College of Cornell University and started in April 2023, with completion expected by May 2027.
