Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- At least 18 years of age
- Diagnosed with sickle cell disease of any genotype
- Serum ferritin levels 2400 ng/mL (up to 80 patients) or less than 400 ng/mL with cardiac symptoms like shortness of breath or leg swelling (up to 20 patients)
- Willing to undergo regular cardiac imaging including echocardiograms, ECG, and cardiac MRI
- ECOG performance status of 0 to 1
- Able to read, understand, and provide written informed consent
- Approved for participation by the treating physician
You will not qualify if you...
- Unable to attend scheduled follow-up visits
- Known heart failure
- Unstable angina
- Uncontrolled dysrhythmias
- Acute pulmonary embolism
- Active infection or severe medical conditions that might limit study participation
- History of allergy or contraindication to chelation therapy
- Severe kidney or liver impairment
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
