What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating educational tools to improve early advance care planning (ACP) in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 18 to 39 with advanced solid tumors or high-grade brain tumors. These cancers may have spread locally or to distant parts of the body and represent a significant cause of disease-related death among AYAs. The study aims to introduce key ACP concepts early in treatment to help patients clarify care goals, discuss end-of-life preferences, and complete advance directives. Participants will watch a brief, on-demand educational video about ACP at the start of the study and then, one month later, attend a tailored ACP appointment lasting about one hour. This appointment is conducted by either an AYA social worker or a palliative medicine physician assistant and focuses on reviewing an ACP guide designed specifically for AYAs and answering related questions. Additional activities include electronic health record reviews and survey completion. During the study, participants will be assessed for the feasibility of implementing early ACP and their satisfaction with the educational tools over up to one year. Researchers will also monitor advance directive completion rates and changes in ACP readiness and anxiety at baseline, four months, and seven months. The total study period allows for close monitoring and follow-up to better understand how these tools impact early ACP in this patient group.
