What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying how different doses of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) affect motivation, feelings, and physical responses related to cigarette smoking. The study focuses on cigarette demand, tobacco craving, mood, heart rate, blood pressure, breath carbon monoxide, and cognitive performance. It compares multiple THC doses and a placebo in people who smoke cigarettes and also use THC either by smoking or vaping in a controlled lab setting. Participants receive three different THC doses (0 mg, 5 mg, and 30 mg) over six visits, along with combustible cigarettes containing either low or full nicotine levels (0.03 mg and 0.80 mg). The study uses a double-blind, placebo-controlled design with crossover, randomly assigning participants to receive THC either by smoking or vaporizing. This approach helps examine how matching or differing routes of THC and tobacco affect the outcomes. During the study visits, researchers measure cigarette demand intensity and elasticity 45 minutes after THC or placebo use. They also track withdrawal symptoms, smoking urges, drug effects, heart rate, blood pressure, and cognitive task performance at multiple times up to six hours post-administration. The study involves healthy adults aged 21 or older who use tobacco and cannabis regularly, with safety and drug use closely monitored throughout participation.
