Researchers are studying the effects of non-surgical periodontal therapy on certain salivary biomarkers and clinical measures in adults with periodontitis. This chronic inflammatory disease damages tooth-supporting tissues, and smoking worsens this condition while reducing therapy effectiveness. The trial compares outcomes between smokers and non-smokers to understand how smoking affects these biomarkers and disease activity. Participants receive standardized non-surgical periodontal therapy involving scaling at the first visit and root planing one week later. The study includes 44 adults with Stage II or III periodontitis, divided equally into smokers and non-smokers. After treatment, a follow-up visit at six weeks assesses changes in saliva biomarkers and periodontal health. During the study, saliva samples and clinical periodontal measurements like Plaque Index, Gingival Index, bleeding on probing, Probing Pocket Depth, and Clinical Attachment Level are collected at baseline and six weeks post-therapy. Saliva is processed for specific biomarker analysis using ELISA kits. The research team analyzes these data to evaluate therapy impact and differences between smokers and non-smokers, with participant involvement lasting about six weeks post-treatment.
