Peer-led Educational Support to Improve Treatment Outcomes in Adults with Drug-Susceptible Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Southern Ethiopia

This research investigates the impact of a peer-led educational intervention on treatment outcomes among adults diagnosed with drug-susceptible pulmonary tuberculosis in Southern Ethiopia. The study aims to improve treatment success, quality of life, reduce disability and depressive symptoms, and decrease healthcare workload. Its findings are intended to support policy makers, clinicians, patients, and researchers, as well as educational and training programs. Participants receive a structured peer-led educational program alongside the standard anti-tuberculosis treatment. Trained peer educators, who have been successfully treated for TB, deliver sessions focused on improving adherence, increasing TB knowledge, managing side effects, reducing stigma, and promoting healthy behaviors. These sessions use interactive methods such as group discussions, experience sharing, Q&A, and motivational support over the typical 6-month TB treatment period. During the study, participants are engaged in these educational and support sessions while continuing their standard care. Researchers will measure the treatment success rate at the end of the 6-month period. The study also aims to assess participants knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to tuberculosis, with an overall goal of enhancing TB control and prevention strategies in the study area and beyond.
