Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Chronic hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or CKD 5 treated conservatively
  • Age between 18 and 85 years
  • Indication for treatment with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA)
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Known allergy to acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)
  • Known contraindication to ASA, such as recent bleeding
  • Current treatment with ASA without a medical indication
  • Raised reticulocyte count
  • Current anticoagulant therapy like warfarin or ADP receptor inhibitors except short-term dialysis-related
  • Short expected life expectancy
  • Inability to provide informed consent
  • Expected non-compliance
  • Active cancer except non-melanoma skin cancer
  • Iron deficiency (reticulocyte hemoglobin <1.8 fmol) unless treated
  • Change in ESA dose greater than 33.3% within last 2 months
  • Women under 50 years old or menstruating (fertile women)
  • Stable Aranesp dose less than 20 micrograms per week
