To investigate the effect of Vicia faba protein concentrate, a protein derived from Fava bean extract, on delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Participants receive either 2.4g/day of PeptiStrong® supplement capsules or placebo capsules for 14 days until a strenuous exercise session. Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Males and females 18 to 45 years of age
- Willing to fast overnight on the 4 testing occasions
- Agree to avoid additional supplements, especially protein-based products, during the study
- Moderately active, exercising 3 to 5 days per week
- Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English
- Agree to maintain normal diet and perform only light to moderate exercise during the study
- Body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 29.9 kg/m2
- Agree to avoid alcohol in the 48 hours before each test day
- Willing to complete questionnaires, records, diaries, and all lab visits
- Refrain from exercise for 48 hours before each test or blood draw
- Considered healthy by General Health Questionnaire
- Non-smoker
You will not qualify if you...
- Glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase deficiency
- Alcohol or drug abuse in the past year
- Testosterone or estrogen supplementation (except women on oral contraceptives)
- Pregnant, nursing, or planning pregnancy
- Participation in any other clinical trial in the past 30 days
- Participation in any PepsiCo trial in the past 6 months
- Unstable medical conditions
- Complaints interfering with ability to exercise
- Cognitive impairment or inability to give informed consent
- Conditions affecting mobility or muscle metabolism of lower limbs
- Use of creatine supplements, corticosteroids, NSAIDs, amino acids, injectable peptides, collagen, or nicotinamide
- History of neurological disorders or significant psychiatric illness
- Any condition that could affect eligibility or study safety
- Resistance or aerobic exercise within 48 hours of test days
- More than 3 high-intensity exercise sessions per week
- Use of recovery methods like sea swims, foam rolling, cryotherapy, or excessive stretching during days 14-17
- Contact with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases in the past 14 days
- Hepatitis A or B positive or sexual partner with hepatitis or HIV not on medication
- Employment or immediate family employment with companies competing with Gatorade
