Comparing Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy and Standard Scaling for Periodontal Treatment in Adults with Obesity

Researchers are comparing antimicrobial photodynamic therapy aPDT combined with scaling and root planing to scaling and root planing alone for treating periodontal disease in patients with obesity. The study aims to find out if adding aPDT improves periodontal health and reduces inflammation, as well as to examine differences in the protein makeup of gingival fluid after treatment. This interventional trial is led by the University of Sao Paulo and involves adults aged 18 to 70 with periodontal disease and obesity. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups one receives scaling and root planing followed by aPDT using methylene blue and a red laser, while the other receives only scaling and root planing. Both treatments are non-surgical procedures performed to clean the teeth and gums. The study uses a double-blind design to reduce bias. Participants will be evaluated at the start of the study and then again at 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment. Assessments include measuring probing depth, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing, and changes in gingival fluid proteins. These measures help researchers understand the impact of the treatments on periodontal health. The total follow-up period lasts six months, during which safety and treatment effects are monitored.
