What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating the effects of two different altitude training strategies on physical performance and body adaptations in elite race walkers living at altitude. This randomized controlled trial compares alternating altitude training, which includes some sessions under simulated higher-altitude conditions, with fixed-altitude training, where all sessions occur at a regular altitude training base. The study focuses on assessing cardiovascular, pulmonary, and hematological changes to better understand how these approaches impact elite athletes. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. The alternating altitude training group will perform selected training sessions at simulated higher altitudes combined with regular altitude training, while the fixed-altitude group will complete all sessions at their usual altitude. The intervention lasts for 4 weeks, during which both groups follow the same prescribed training program adapted to their assigned altitude conditions. Throughout the 4-week intervention, participants will undergo various tests and measurements before and after training. These include body weight, body fat percentage, lung function tests like forced vital capacity and maximal voluntary ventilation, heart function assessments such as left ventricular volume and ejection fraction, and exercise capacity tests like maximal oxygen uptake and jump height. Blood samples will measure red blood cell counts, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and erythropoietin. These assessments help evaluate the physical and physiological impact of the two altitude training methods.
