Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Aged 30 to 90 years old
- Diagnosed with metabolic syndrome according to the International Diabetes Federation Chinese Adult Criteria, or considered high-risk by meeting at least two metabolic syndrome risk factors
- Risk factors include abdominal obesity (waist circumference 90 cm for men, 80 cm for women), hyperglycemia (fasting blood glucose 5.6 mmol/L or on hypoglycemic drugs), hypertension (systolic 130 mmHg or diastolic 85 mmHg or on blood pressure medication), high triglycerides (fasting 1.70 mmol/L or on antihyperlipidemic drugs), low HDL cholesterol (<1.04 mmol/L for men, <1.29 mmol/L for women or on antihyperlipidemic drugs)
- Signed informed consent and willingness to participate in the study
You will not qualify if you...
- Use of drugs or dietary supplements affecting platelet function (e.g., aspirin, fish oil) within the past six months
- Blood system diseases or infections
- Blood pressure 160/100 mmHg
- Low platelet count (whole blood platelet <100 x 10^9/mL)
- Abnormal hemoglobin levels (male <120 g/L, female <110 g/L)
- Low hematocrit levels (male <40%, female <37%)
- Prothrombin time outside normal reference range
- Pregnant or nursing women
- Abnormal menstrual cycle, or use of birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy
- Gastric ulcer, liver or kidney dysfunction
