Who Can Participate
Eligibility Criteria
You may qualify if you...
- Adult patients admitted to ICU after ileus surgery such as perforated viscus, infarcted bowel, strangulated hernia, anastomotic leakage, diverticulitis, or intestinal obstruction who will require postoperative sedation and ventilation
- Abdominal sepsis defined as organ dysfunction with a SOFA score increase of 2 or more points due to intra-abdominal sepsis
You will not qualify if you...
- Known allergy to ketamine or dexmedetomidine
- Confirmed pregnancy
- Heart failure classified as class 3 or 4 by the New York Heart Association
- Kidney failure according to RIFLE classification
- Liver failure indicated by serum total protein less than 3 g/dl and total bilirubin over 5 mg/dl
- Known or suspected brain death
- Patients receiving neuromuscular blockers during the first 48 hours of ICU admission
