Eligibility Criteria

Eligible

You may qualify if you...

  • Adult patients admitted to ICU after ileus surgery such as perforated viscus, infarcted bowel, strangulated hernia, anastomotic leakage, diverticulitis, or intestinal obstruction who will require postoperative sedation and ventilation
  • Abdominal sepsis defined as organ dysfunction with a SOFA score increase of 2 or more points due to intra-abdominal sepsis
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Known allergy to ketamine or dexmedetomidine
  • Confirmed pregnancy
  • Heart failure classified as class 3 or 4 by the New York Heart Association
  • Kidney failure according to RIFLE classification
  • Liver failure indicated by serum total protein less than 3 g/dl and total bilirubin over 5 mg/dl
  • Known or suspected brain death
  • Patients receiving neuromuscular blockers during the first 48 hours of ICU admission
